1. Though never in these debates, SAD elsewhere during the senatorial campaign identified Republican policy, as expressed in AL’s “House Divided” speech, with inevitable racial amalgamation. See the Ottawa debate, note 21, p. 24. See also “Negro equality” in the glossary, pp. 328–29.

2. AL alludes to the common-law marriage of Col. Richard M. Johnson, vice-president of the United States under Martin Van Buren, to an African American woman, who was also his slave, and to his two mixed-race daughters.

3. The following is from SAD’s Sept. 6 speech at Jacksonville. The texts of Trumbull’s speeches of Aug. 7 in Chicago and Aug. 27 at Alton are in the Chicago Press and Tribune, Aug. 9 and Aug. 31, 1858. Unidentified newspaper clippings containing extracts from the Alton and Jacksonville speeches are included in the Debates Scrapbook, 142–44, 146.

4. AL repeats a famous remark by Andrew Jackson that had wide currency, uttered on the occasion of his ordering the removal of federal funds from the Bank of the United States in 1833 over the objection of Treasury Secretary William Duane. See Jackson to Duane, June 26, 1833, in John Spencer Bassett, ed., The Correspondence of Andrew Jackson (Washington: Carnegie Institute of Washington, 1931), 5:128.

5. Contrary to AL’s expectation, neither paper printed the lengthy excerpt from Trumbull’s speech that Lincoln says he handed to the reporters. The Chicago Press and Tribune inserted at this point, within brackets, the following editorial note: “The extracts handed by Mr. Lincoln to our reporter are too lengthy to appear in this number of the PRESS AND TRIBUNE. Judge Trumbull’s speech at Alton has already had a place in our columns, and Senator Douglas’ remarks at Jacksonville are faithfully repeated in his portion of this (Charleston) debate.”

6. The following is from Trumbull’s Alton speech, in Debates Scrapbook, 142.

7. Bigler’s remarks are contained in Trumbull’s Alton speech, Debates Scrapbook, 143, and more fully in Congressional Globe, 35th Cong., 1st Sess., Senate, Dec. 9, 1857, Dec. 21, 1857, 1:21, 113.

8. The following is from SAD’s Jacksonville speech, Debates Scrapbook, 146.

9. Ibid.

10. Trumbull’s Alton speech, Debates Scrapbook, 143. Capitalization reflects that of newspaper clipping.

11. The following is from ibid.

12. This quotation from the Toombs bill (S. 356) SAD reported to the Senate on June 30, 1856, is cited in both Trumbull’s Alton speech (Debates Scrapbook, 144) and SAD’s speech at Jacksonville (144, 146).

13. The following is from SAD’s Jacksonville speech, Debates Scrapbook, 146.

14. The following is from Trumbull’s Alton speech, Debates Scrapbook, 143.
